new evens: victories and tragedies

the past 2 weeks brought blessings and trials to me. everything was very super fast. and bilis tumakbo ng oras...

Monday: April 2, 2007

well, this day was not stressful, no problem at all, everything went normally. so, i just prepared myself, my money and other stuffsa for the enrollment tomorrow... though it would be another battle, i have no choice but to have summer classes so that i would be a regular student pag second year na ako.

Enrollment

KAPOY!!!! it was so tiring... kapoy!!! enrollment was literraly challenging my patience and strength. especially that i applied to chnge my course, i had to go to more offices and that means falling in a line of NUMEROUS students. i was able to finally shift to BS chem from chem eng. it was so sad, because my prof/terachers in engineering division were sad about it. well, it was really not my fault, it was because of DOST's endorsement for me to shift. well, i think, i can do nothing about it... i'll just have to go on with life, bringing the name of my new division, the natural science and mathematics divison with a new course-BS CHEMISTRY.

but, i was not yet able to enroll myself, because of the pilllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllla of people all over ther campus.

Enrollment part 2

then i went back to addu to enlist the three subjects that i have missed in the bs chem curriculum- lit 1, hist 111 and theo 12. ok, at least i am assured of these subjects and next tuesday, i'll be starting to redo my craft- studying...=D

but it was really not thart easy to finally enroll myself. i first went to NS division to get my white form, then to the finance office for the payment. and it was in the finance office that really really tested my patience. then after some hours, i mean wasted hours, i was finally enrlled but i still have to validate my ID. but, i decided to go home fi9rst to take my lunch, because it was almost 12 noon already.

in the afternoon ID validation time... but on my way to the mini auditorium, i saw students read the issue of the FYEYE, the first year publicarion of ADDu. i was intrigued, so i went to the samahan office and had my own copy of te issue. then, i went to the mini aud for ID validation... and guess what it was a long liiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiine of people. super dooper dooper dooper dami ng tao. i have no choice, alangan mag-back out pa ako, baka magkapenalty ako sa OSA noh. so i was at the tail of the line but later on, more people were coming and the line was moving.

it was actually a boring time, but i remembered that i am holding a magazine during those times, so i read.... it was so inviting to read, because it concerns me and ther students- firsat year students in ADDU. anyways, i've read a number of articles already until i came across an article entitled "Take A bow- Getting to Know the Most Outstandign First Year Student." so i was somehow interested about it, because i was IT. as i was reading the article, it was inspiring and heart warming that the editorial board cared to feature me, my story and experiences in the magazine. well, it was really a blessing. and my picture was there which made me feel shy, because people who mght read the article would know me... ulaw daw... hehehe... and i read some more articles and finally, i got my ID validated. i shared the story to my parents and they were happier than i wasd when they heard the story.

HOLY WEEK MOMENTS

Araw ng kagitingan

nothing special today... it was just that i prepared my things for tomorrow and conditioned myself for the upcoming battles fof the rest of my cololege life... Study na pud!!!=D

Tuesday: April 10, 2007

everything started today... i woke up with all smiles and optimism... finally i would take the subjects so that i would become a regular second year student next year. yehey...

so i went to school, with some sort of extraordinary positive energies within me... i first visited the chapel for some morning praises... than i went to the theology division to ask about the room for the theo 12 class... but before i asked about anything, a note was posrted on the door saying:

the 12 classes
7:40-9:10
DISSOLVED
my goodness.... i felt that it was the end of my life... IRREGULAR NA AKO THIS SECOND YEAR.... pagkanalang.......but no choice, they closed the subject because only 5 students enrolled for it... so i went to my other class... lit 1. well, there was a teacher and she is a Ph D. i felt secured that i would learn a lot from her, but nervous at the same time, because for sure, she would be having great expectations from us... and then and there we had our firs quiz, during the first day of classes. tignanmonganaman... i said it right, she had high expectations...so it was it. i went home firs because i had 4 hours bereak between the two subjects...
when i went back to school at a super early time, i met Jaques and ate Kai... at firs i did not see them, because of some light things and effects, but whern i saw them, i felt so happy, because i saw them,... then we chatted about things and all, but they have to leave kasi Jaques will still buy plane tickets for manila... good luck Jacques

then, it was time, i went to class, but there was no teacher. WHAT!? another ground for me to become an irregular student, then i had no choice but to leave and go home.

when i went home, i told mama everything and she said i-drop nalang nak kay sayang bayad sa isa ka subject... hay nalang... so i don't know what to do... i called up DOST davao, DOST bicutan and all but it was so frustrating, no one can answer my question... why will i shift? then mama made me t calm down... and i gathered my thoughts, but the tension and the fear that i might not graduate on time was still there... and hay nalang, GIKALIBANGA KO... but mama and papa and my siblings were there comforting me... and thank you for that CASAS family...=D

so, i had no choice, but to prepare for my Lit quiz part 2 tomorrow and all that and hope that the hist teacher would come...

to you Lord, i place my trust... you are my help, and to you i lift everything...amen

Wednesday: April 11, 2007

i was hoping for the best... so i went to chool prepared, we had a sort of introduction in class and all that... so it was so fun and all. then all of a sudden..."Get one half crosswise..." SHEEEETOOOOX!!! she did not discuss anything, but she gave a reading assignment and here it is again... Quiz number 2..... it is another quiz... so i had no choice but to give some educated guesses to some numbers and use some stored knowledge during my pisay days...

then i have to rush to Assuption, because it was the recognition day of my sister Camille... thank God, she is the second honors... and i am proud of her... =D... so i rode a route 10 jeepney and hoping that i could catch up... when i went down, i was just on time... the emcee already called the first honors and yehey i was thankful because i was really on time... TIMING jud!!! hehehe... then, i went up the stage... had pictures taken and there you have it,.. my sister was so happy and smiling with my presence...=D... then i met past teachers and said out hello and some stuffs in life... hahaha. i felt young again being in my rade school. hehehe=D. then we ate at kuya ed magallanes... their food were better and the ambiance was okay... but my stomach is not yet well, so after eating, we directly went home and i tooot... Success... hehehe... then i hurried tio school for my history class and finally our teacher was there... praise the Lord... and i was just amazed with her, because she's so fluent, composed and witty. grabe... mga issues ginaungkat iya to the smallest detail...=D...after the class, the secretary in the NS Division fetched me and we went to the division, for some documents... and that was my day...

hay salamat Lord... nakarecover somehow akong life... though the worry and the uncertainty of what might happen is still there, at least things were getting better this time=D...

thank you Lord for hearing my prayers and ansering them the best way they are now. Amen

Thursday: April 12, 2007

oh no... our teacher will be giving anotehr long test today... shatong na naman to. but befroe that she promised that we will be having a film viewing related o the lesson... so there it was... PANITIKAN... it was interesting, because it explicitly showed everything about Phil Lit. then when the film ended, she asked us.. "Class, are you prepared for a quiz tday?"... and alangan mapakaipokrito mi na 'yes maam' so we all said no... and thank God she did not have a quyiz, burt she promised a longer quiz tomorrow... then, i went home and prepared for my hist assignment... cramming? procrastinating? hehehe... then, i rad some chapters on precolonial accounts of the country... and it was ok... pero medyo boring ang history... then i went to school, and we had a lecture,..hehehe... i was somehow amazed to her way of teaching, because she did not make any of our classmates doze to sleep... her voice was powerful that we were all cnvinced to really listen well... then, it ended...

then, i felt like going to the chapel, but unconciously, my feet is leading me to the NS division once more... for what? then iu decided to stay idle for 5 minutes and appreciate the beauty of ADDU, though small, but POWERFUL!!! =D. anyways... i finally realized that i was supposed to drop theo12 because it was dissolved. so, i did. then i went to the office/room of the chairman for hewr signature... (The NS chairman is also a chem teacher)... so i gave my form to Dr. Lourdes Simpol and she signed it. i also asked... "Maam, di ko baya nakuha ang theo12, so irreg na ako maam noh!?" but, instead of saying the expected yes, she said:

"Michael, do not worry, i have contacted the program coordiantor fr Chem (Dr. Afalla) and we will make sure that yuregular and take the theo 12 next sem. pinrogram ka na namin... bast just remind him pag enrillment okay..."
oh my.......... it was more than what i have expected, actually, super dooper more than what i expected... =D. grabe si Lord, he is so Great that he made my seemingly hopeless situation have hope... thanks to NS division fr that...=D
the day ended...
thank you Lord for the extraordinary new hope and light that you have given me... please continue to be with me as i continue to do your will. amen.!!!!
Friday: April 13, 2007

VICTORY!!!--->> the chronicles of Feb 14. 2007

Feb 14-- a very special day... a day full of loving and not to mention a day of joy and family time...

but more than this, GOD has made this day extra special for me... since it is GAWAD 2007 -the recognition of ADDU's academically excellent students.

the program has started at 7 pm. it was exiting... but i felt somehow nervous because it was my first time to be there...

various extra curricular awards were given. but, the "highlight of the event" as the emcees would say it are the various academic awards that ADDU would be giving out that night.

the first academic award was the dean's pin award given to graduating students who consistently excelled in their academics...

then the most outstanding students award followed.

i was one of the top 5 nominees for the most outstanding first year students for this year...

and luckily i am the MOST OUTSTANDING FIRST YEAR STUDENT of ADDU for this year...

it was really amazing and i was shocked... i can't believe it, because imagine me getting that award even though i was late because of all the singapore and UP stuff... but i am so overwhelmed and happy because despite thouse frustrating downfalls, i still emerged a victor! =D

i actually cried when i delivered my speech...

"first and foremost i would like to thank God for everything... i never thought that i would get this award. thank you to ateneo. thank you for accepting me and for educating me... thank you to my parents and to everyone here supporting me. AD MAJOREM DEI GLORIAM"

it was a memorable night for me... because through the award that i received, i was freed from the frustrations and burdens that my failures in singapore interviews and UP has brought to my life. truly, i have confirmed from that event that i need some sort of the jesuit education which ateneo offers...

may this story inspire people to do things not for themselves but for the greater glory of GOD!!!

Defying gravity--->> by falling in love

they say that when you love, you fall... but it really is the opposite...

how nice it is to fall in love...

especially if that special someone is with you on Valentines day...

i really wish that my crush some rooms away our classroom would care to even just smile at me on that day...

oh... yes... my cush next doors...

she's soooooooooo beautiful
with tantalizing eyes...
inspiring smiles...
nice personality...
intelligent...

she's a perfect girl...

but i've never had a close encounter with her so i have no choice but to admire her from afar...

there i go again... loving from afar...

hopefully my valentina would come soon so that the emtiness in my heart would fade away... ang lalim

BaLaNcE------->>>(Where should the equilibrium shift?)

Le Chatelier's principle states that a system in equilibrium tends to shift to the other side of the reaction to relieve the stress of the system.change in temperature, pressure and concentration affects the equilibrium of a system therefore a system is forced to shift on the other side to attain equilibrium
----->> i hope i was like a chemical reaction
at this point in my life, i said to myself that i am superdooooper imbalanced. i have a nurtured brain, but with a dwindeling spirit and a dying heart. i told myself am i pressured, tired or giving up... but i answered definitely NOT.

i think that i am just so imbalanced. i am not in equilibrium...

i think i ought to shift some attention to other things...

i need to divide my time and focuse it to more worth doing things...

i ought to change mu habits...

cut on the useless stuffs...

do more of the better ones...

i have to release my expectations...

just do what you can...

be who you are...

and continue...

and surely i could shift to the other aspects of my life so that stress may be relieved and EQUILIBRIUM be attained...

(hopefully with God's help)

on personality renewal

this year is another year to celebrate the uniqueness that sets me apart from others. i know that it is not yet too late to type my new years resolution in this blog since it is still january=D. i am writing this to keep myself aware of my strengths, mend my weaknesses, reveal my blind spots and strengthen my personality as a whole.

for 2007, i WILL do all these things:

1. i will strive for balance. since, for the past years, i have always focused my development on my mind. so now, for a change, i will do my best to give more time for my social life, work, family interaction, spirital development, extra curricular activities and other non urgent yet essential tasks.
2. i will regularly recharge myself. i will set at least 20 minutes per day for solitude. i will do my best to check myself more often so that stress may be prevented and to maximize my performance. i will keep up with this blog as i create my own journal at home.
3. i will update myself regularly. i will make it apoint to read two books discussing different topics from my course so that i may become a versatile person without neglecting my majort subjects. and i will do my best to excel in all my fields of study making good use of my God given talents.
4. i will be a man for others. i will practice cura personalis and seeing things with a new and better perspective. i will share myself more for service and do my best to work for a cause and strive for excellence in doing my roles at all times.
5. i will be a soldier of heaven. i will live by the laws of God and obey His commandments. i will renounce any immoral acts and bring people close to God!!!

all these things are never impossible with the grace and power of God Almighty. i will do all these things and other important practices (though not stated) with diligence, dedication and whole heartedly despite the judgemental others in this world.

(Sgd)Michael Casas

towards the realm of chemistry

since i have no choice, but to shift to bs chemistry, i also have no choice but to learn more about the course. and so i somehow inspired myself to take the course heads up and with greater inspiration. basically, chem eng and chem are sister courses in a way that they have common chemistry subjects, but chemistry focuses more on a lot of chemistry.

well, i love chemistry ever since, i like the experiments and all, and even the culminating and exiting thesis makes me go even more excited about life. anyways, chemistry is the central science according to our teacher. and from it, i reflected that perhaps it is one of the most versatile sciences ever, since a chemistry graduate may choose to proceed to medicine, engineering or even management with ease. or if not, proceed to graduate and post graduate studies. how interesting.

chemists are inevitable in any manufacturing company. a chemist is there in making beers, alcohols and wines. experimenting on food, studying the environment, create a new drug, maximize raw materials for production and many other industrial jobs. then a chemist may proceed to the research and developmant side of science studying chemical reactions, doing analytical methods, environmental evaluation etc. and most of all chemistry graduates can always enter the academe and share the prowess of chemistry to other people.

perhaps chemistry would be fulfilling, but before that happens, i should always be willing to learn new newer and the newestr things about it. and so Go Go GO Michael...=D

releiving some stresses in life

oh my goodness, i have almost neglected this blog of mine... my supposed to be journal and sketch of my life. well, i'm very sorry because lately our school work, i mean extraordinary schoolwork somehow ate my spare time for updating, but nevertheless i am doing my best to balane everything.
now to start the retelling of the long story, the midterms started somehow fine, but there were still teachers who never did commit themselves to excellence fully. some teachers were still late impeding the learning process. but nevertheless i made the most of who and what was available. then during the duration of the classes, teachers were so diligent in giving successive examinations, projects and long lectures. it's driving me crazy. but the good thing is i have learned to somehow recharge myself through internet surfing, interaction with others and even in solitude. oh come on its so nice to be alone, right? and so since this week is the PAASCU week for the school, so the terachers are becoming busy preparing for that day. the good thing is they are giving extra effort in teaching to keep up with the standards. then that is great!
and now, i am having some spare time, since we would only have alecture in anal geom and ang saya ng buhay. hehehe... i'm so happy na nakapag blog blog ako today.=D

Every year brings a horizon where each of us etches new destinations as per our own desires and requirements. Time is the greatest teacher and bestows wisdom through the experiences of life. To make the best of all the positive indications that life can provide for us, it is most important to understand our inclinations and basic nature. For the seventh sign of the zodiac, Libra, it is beneficial to understand that the most important factor is balance. This power of harmonizing ability is a very essential and important aspect of the planet Venus that governs Libra. This is the core essence of human society and makes man the most advanced living being of all living beings. Humans dream and there is a dream for justice as well. Key words in the life of a Libra are very often beauty and harmony. The wisdom of Venus also bestows innocence. the gift of people

christmas has always been a season of joy and happiness... on my part, i feel so blessed because God has always been very unconditional when it comes to EVERYTHING (i can't enumerate all of them). lately besides the other blessings, i saw and receiver a lot of people who has always been good and kind to me all these years. they are these people who cared to listen, share and they never forgot our friendship even though we are separated by a large distance...

yesterday, (friday), december 22, 2006, the FANTASTIC 4- composed by archie villar, abigail albino, ayesha suribas and me (michael casas) had a reunion at G. Mall. i was very happy yesterday because after say seven months of separation, we finally reunited once more. there were a lot of stories, countless and very funny... hahaha... ayesha miss na jud tika ba... and i was so happy when we met once more... abi and archie, kitakits sa school everyday... hehehehe...

a lot of stories warmed my heart from the three of them... but before the chikahan started we first searched for a place to eat, because we were already starving that time. we were actually confused on where to eat, because there were a lot of restaurants and kainans there... but we agreed to finally settle for kuya ed... actually it was the peak time of the buffet store, becuase it was like 12:00 and so there were a lot of people in the store, nevertheless we were able to eat. for me, the store is somehow fair, due to its low price, but the variety of food that it serves somehow discourages me to come back... anyways, as we were eating ayesha suribas, told me about my long time friend Jan Fructoso Lavarez... I was very happy when she told me about him...Jan, miss na jud tika ba... hehehe... regards sa imong mama ha... lipay jud ko na classmate mo ni yek yek... papa bear na diay ka karon ha...=D...after that heart warming and super busog meal, we decided to watch a movie... HAPPY FEET... weeeee... it was the latest movie that i saw after bloodrayne... happy feet was nice and really worth it... it is for children, for the youth and for the young at heart... like me... i was entertained by the movie's nice cinematography and fair storyline... so folks don't take away the penguins's fishes that they may not starve... then the four of us went to the videooke stall of the mall... i sang and we sang... hahahaha... but among us, i garnered the lowest score because yabag ko mukanta... hahahaha... congrats abi for getting the highest scores... hehehehe... more than the scores, we really enjoyed those moments.... then after some singing we felt hungry once more so we decided to avail of the 50% off on the price of all ice cream items in merco. i tell you it is worth it!!!anyways, before we enjoyed the mouth-watering and delicious ice cream bowl, we waited for perhaps 1 hour. it could have been because of the numerous customers availing the promo. as in, there were alot of people inside the store and every minute more and more arrives. it even came to a point when archie's patience was really at the brink... so i helped him calm down... but unexpectedly, i saw a person who helped change the course of my life in some ways. i am talking about my elementary teacher, Mrs. Brenda Belonio-Jacobo. maam hugged me when she saw me and in return, i was so happy like i was in heaven the very moment that i saw her. so we said our kumustahans and all. maam is now teaching at Bolton elementary school, she is married, and has a child... i can't explain in words the actual feeling that i had yesterday. maam, i am very happy na after four or five years nagkita tayong muli. after our memorable conversation with maam belonio-jacobo, i went back to our table and waited for maybe ten minutes more and we finally had our ice creams. we ate and enjoyed the ice creams... i also enjoyed it because finally i once again had a lavishing and satisfying ice cream meal... hahaha. but the day has to end, so we decided to part ways... but before we left, i gave my personalized cards to them. i made it with love and pamugas to make them feel that i care. then abi also prepared something, she gave us the sketch of our faces. it was super carbon copy of our pictures in the yearbook. abi i really appreciate it... hahaha. gipost ko na nga iyun sa wall ng aking kwarto eh... hehehe... then we went to san pedro street for a while and then we saw the colorful lights of the city and we finally part ways.

it was a super dooper memorable days. it was full of joy and fulfillment. thank you Lord for everything. i really felt the love of the people whom you sent me. i thank you Lord for the biggest universe to the quarks that i am living in and living with... Lord, allow me to become an instrument of your love and blessings so that others would see the majesty of your plans amen.AMEN!!!

a sudden news

the department of science and technology called me up yesterday and told me that i SHOULD be shifting to BS CHEMISTRY instead of BS CHEMICAL ENGINEERING. what? it surprised and hurt me because somehow i was comfortable and already programmed myself to become a chemical engineer and here comes a news telling me to shift. what's the matter? i can't understand it seems that almost all of my decisions and choices in the past months or should i say this year has been disapproved and failed.

for one, i was not selected in the singapore scholarship though i passed the examination. second, i was not able to study in manila with my mat eng course, and just yesterday i was asked to shift to bs chem because they say that addu is a center of excellence and development in chemistry and not in chemical engineering. okay... i somehow understood their purpose. they wanted me to excel in college and acquire a competitive degree in the school where i am in... ok i yeild to your decision

my life this year has been full of redirections as stated by my experiences typed in the previous paragraph. i was not allowed to study abroad and in manila because of greater purpose whose benefits i am harvesting now. perhaps this redirecting in course might as well produce better and more fruitful outcomes with the guidance og God. i know that i can manage to cope up.

with these experiences i could say that God never abandons us in whatever way, instead he allows a degree of hurt in our lives to open our eyes and lives to bigger opportunities which he prepared for us till eternity.

AMEN!!!

establishing my identity

i recently had a self examination if i could really finish this course of chemical engineering, but of course i cannot have my personal approval to convince myself, instead i've read an interesting article and i copied and pasted its contents in my blog... here it goes...

All Right, So What is a Chemical Engineer?
It is true that chemical engineers are comfortable with chemistry, but they do much more with this knowledge than just make chemicals. In fact, the term "chemical engineer" is not even intended to describe the type of work a chemical engineer performs. Instead it is meant to reveal what makes the field different from the other branches of engineering.
All engineers employ mathematics, physics, and the engineering art to overcome technical problems in a safe and economical fashion. Yet, it is the chemical engineer alone that draws upon the vast and powerful science of chemistry to solve a wide range of problems. The strong technical and social ties that bind chemistry and chemical engineering are unique in the fields of science and technology. This marriage between chemists and chemical engineers has been beneficial to both sides and has rightfully brought the envy of the other engineering fields.
The breadth of scientific and technical knowledge inherent in the profession has caused some to describe the chemical engineer as the "universal engineer." Yes, you are hearing me correctly; despite a title that suggests a profession composed of narrow specialists, chemical engineers are actually extremely versatile and able to handle a wide range of technical problems.

So What Exactly Does This "Universal Engineer" Do?
During the past Century, chemical engineers have made tremendous contributions to our standard of living. To celebrate these accomplishments, the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) has compiled a list of the "10 Greatest Achievements of Chemical Engineering." These triumphs are summarized below:

The Atom, as Large as Life:

Biology, medicine, metallurgy, and power generation have all been revolutionized by our ability to split the atom and isolate isotopes. Chemical engineers played a prominent role in achieving both of these results. Early on facilities such as DuPont's Hanford Chemical Plant used these techniques to bring an abrupt conclusion to World War II with the production of the atomic bomb. Today these technologies have found uses in more peaceful applications. Medical doctors now use isotopes to monitor bodily functions; quickly identifying clogged arteries and veins. Similarly biologists gain invaluable insight into the basic mechanisms of life, and archaeologists can accurately date their historical findings.

The Plastic Age:

The 19th Century saw enormous advances in polymer chemistry. However, it required the insights of chemical engineers during the 20th Century to make mass produced polymers a viable economic reality. When a plastic called Bakelite was introduced in 1908 it sparked the dawn of the "Plastic Age" and quickly found uses in electric insulation, plugs & sockets, clock bases, iron cooking handles, and fashionable jewelry (see OIL). Today plastic has become so common that we hardly notice it exists. Yet nearly all aspects of modern life are positively and profoundly impacted by plastic.

The Human Reactor:

Chemical engineers have long studied complex chemical processes by breaking them up into smaller "unit operations." Such operations might consist of heat exchangers, filters, chemical reactors and the like. Fortunately this concept has also been applied to the human body. The results of such analysis have helped improve clinical care, suggested improvements in diagnostic and therapeutic devices, and led to mechanical wonders such as artificial organs. Medical doctors and chemical engineers continue to work hand in hand to help us live longer fuller lives.
Wonder Drugs for the Masses:
Chemical engineers have been able to take small amounts of antibiotics developed by people such as Sir Arthur Fleming (who discovered penicillin in 1929) and increase their yields several thousand times through mutation and special brewing techniques. Today's low price, high volume, drugs owe their existence to the work of chemical engineers. This ability to bring once scarce materials to all members of society through industrial creativity is a defining characteristic of chemical engineering (see Plastics above, Synthetic Fibers, Food, and Synthetic Rubber below).

Synthetic Fibers, a Sheep's Best Friend:

From blankets and clothes to beds and pillows, synthetic fibers keep us warm, comfortable, and provide a good night's rest. Synthetic fibers also help reduce the strain on natural sources of cotton and wool, and can be tailored to specific applications. For example; nylon stockings make legs look young and attractive while bullet proof vests keep people out of harm's way.
Liquefied Air, Yes it's Cool:
When air is cooled to very low temperatures (about 320 deg F below zero) it condenses into a liquid. Chemical engineers can then separate out the different components. The purified nitrogen can be used to recover petroleum, freeze food, produce semiconductors, or prevent unwanted reactions while oxygen is used to make steel, smelt copper, weld metals together, and support the lives of patients in hospitals.

The Environment, We All Have to Live Here:

Chemical engineers provide economical answers to clean up yesterday's waste and prevent tomorrow's pollution. Catalytic converters, reformulated gasoline, and smoke stack scrubbers all help keep the world clean. Additionally, chemical engineers help reduce the strain on natural materials through synthetic replacements, more efficient processing, and new recycling technologies.

Food, "It's What's For Dinner":

Plants need large amounts of nitrogen, potassium, and phosphorus to grow in abundance. Chemical fertilizers can help provide these nutrients to crops, which in turn provide us with a bountiful and balanced diet. Fertilizers are especially important in certain regions of Asia and Africa where food can sometimes be scarce (See NITROGEN). Advances in biotechnology also offer the potential to further increase worldwide food production. Finally, chemical engineers are at the forefront of food processing where they help create better tasting and most nutritious foods.

Petrochemicals, "Black Gold, Texas Tea":

Chemical engineers have helped develop processes like catalytic cracking to break down the complex organic molecules found in crude oil into much simpler species. These building blocks are then separated and recombined to form many useful products including: gasoline, lubricating oils, plastics, synthetic rubber, and synthetic fibers. Petroleum processing is therefore recognized as an enabling technology, without which, much of modern life would cease to function (see OIL).

Running on Synthetic Rubber:

Chemical engineers played a prominent role in developing today's synthetic rubber industry. During World War II, synthetic rubber capacity suddenly became of paramount importance. This was because modern society runs on rubber. Tires, gaskets, hoses, and conveyor belts (not to mention running shoes) are all made of rubber. Whether you drive, bike, roller-blade, or run; odds are you are running on rubber.
